Duta Besar RI untuk Turki Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, mengatakan pihaknya masih menunggu usulan nama jalan di kawasan Menteng, Jakarta Pusat. Menurut dia, apapun namanya nanti pasti akan mewakili harapan pemimpin dan rakyat Turki.
“Kami masih menunggu usulan resmi nama jalan tersebut,” kata dia dalam keterangan tertulisnya, Senin, 18 Oktober 2021.
Sebelumnya, Wakil Gubernur DKI Jakarta Ahmad Riza Patria berujar nama jalan di kawasan Menteng, Jakarta Pusat akan diganti menjadi nama tokoh Turki, Mustafa Kemal Attaturk. Penamaan ini merupakan salah satu bentuk kerja sama Turki dan Indonesia.
Iqbal menambahkan pemberian nama jalan di Jakarta akan ditentukan pemerintah Turki.

Rencana penamaan jalan di Menteng menjadi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk menuai kontroversi. Salah satunya datang dari Wakil Ketua Umum Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) Anwar Abbas. Abbas menganggap Ataturk merupakan sosok yang mengacak-acak ajaran Islam.
“Banyak sekali hal-hal yang dia lakukan bertentangan dengan ketentuan yang ada dalam Al-Qur’an dan As-Sunnah,” tulis Anwar dalam keterangan tertulisnya pada Ahad, 17 Oktober 2021.
